It’s changed my life in a way I never thought possible. I still have anxiety, it’s always within me, but the more I exercise, the calmer I become and the more my ‘anxious voice’ lessens.

Background
I’m Nottingham born and bred and was someone at school who shied away from sport. I’m a book worm in fact, still am! I developed anxiety at 15 and its something that I live with daily still. I was also involved in a car accident in September 2015 which caused my right side to seize up and in effect stop working and a few months later I was later diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I had numerous visits to the GP and physio and as well as reading lots on the condition, the one thing that kept coming up again and again was the need to exercise. So that’s what I did!
What activities have you tried recently?
I go to the gym at work and love taking part in classes, especially Boogie Bounce – love it!
I’ve joined a beginners running group, am now in my 6th week of an 8 week course
I’ve also got into Cycling – I have 2 bikes and cycle whenever I can, even if it’s just to the shops
I’m also walking a lot more now
How does being active help you?
It’s changed my life in a way I never thought possible. I still have anxiety, it’s always within me, but the more I exercise, the calmer I become and the more my ‘anxious voice’ lessens.
What are your goals?
To try as much sport and activity as I can! I would love to run a 5km event soon, even if its just a run / walk and I want to learn to play football.
All of these are alongside helping my mind to get better too.
What do you like about the This Girl Can campaign?
It’s for women who look like me and I like that! It’s the first campaign that has made me sit up and listen, I can completely relate to it too
What would you say to someone in a similar position to yourself?
Put aside your expectations and start with small steps. Whatever your background, ability, age, size etc etc, there will be an activity for you, just give it a go!
